Visible mending as a record of use
A worn elbow can hold a quiet grid of thread instead of pretending nothing happened.
Visible mending works best when the repair follows the stress that made the hole, not when decoration is laid over weak cloth.
Trim only loose fibers, slide a patch behind the damaged area, and baste it beyond every thin edge. Rows of running stitch should cross sound fabric on both sides so the pull is shared rather than concentrated at the tear.
Choose thread with similar wash requirements and a little contrast in value; perfect color matching often looks accidental, while a deliberate shade makes the repair legible. Finish by washing the garment so the patch and original cloth settle together.
