The swatch and the worn elbow

Late light settles across the workroom while Marlowe lays a washed gauge swatch beside a cream sweater and Tate turns the worn sleeve inside out. Neither repair begins with the decorative stitch. It begins with the quieter work of measuring what the cloth is already doing.

Marlowe works the swatch on interchangeable circular needles, then washes and dries it exactly as the finished sweater will be treated. Only after the stitches relax does she count four inches in both directions. A small square is enough to reveal whether the fabric will drape, pull, or grow once the garment leaves the needles.

Tate traces a rounded backing patch on tightly woven cloth and trims it on a self-healing mat with a guarded rotary cutter. The patch sits beyond the thin area rather than merely covering the hole. A line of basting keeps the layers from drifting while she works small rows of duplicate stitch from sound yarn into sound yarn.

They leave the mend legible. The new yarn is close in value but not identical, so the repaired elbow reads as part of the sweater's history instead of an imitation of untouched cloth. On the table, the needle case closes in order, the cutter retracts, and the loose fibers go into a jar for the next repair.

The useful tools are the ones that make accuracy repeatable: a complete range of needle sizes for finding gauge, and a cutter that can shape a clean patch without tugging the weave. Both have tradeoffs, and both support the work without becoming the story.
