Journal field note
The ribbon before the visit
One cloth-wrapped gift on the bench, finished before the doorbell could make the evening hurry.

I tied the last ribbon around a cloth-wrapped birthday gift before our visit. It was a small thing, but having it ready made the evening feel unhurried.
Tate finished the gift before the rest of the evening began to gather speed. The cloth had been folded around the box earlier in the day, and the final green ribbon was the one small job left on the dining-room bench.
We kept the wrapping simple and left time for the knot to sit correctly instead of pulling it tight in the hallway. A ready gift changed the feeling of the room more than the gift itself could have.
The Journal is for these small preparations as much as the table or the garden: ordinary moments that make room for the people arriving next.
