Journal field note

The green tomatoes could wait

The stakes held steady while the last fruit decided what September would bring.

Green tomatoes on a staked vine beside a brick garden path.

The tomato bed was still productive, but it had stopped needing constant attention. Green fruit hung under the leaves, the bamboo stakes carried the weight without complaint, and the dry paths made it easy to see what could be left alone.

We checked the ties, lifted one tired leaf, and stepped back. There was no reason to rush fruit that was still doing its quiet work on the vine.

The garden pages are built for that kind of measured round: what to cut, what to leave, and which useful tools belong in the work.
