The minute before supper

A pot at the stove, a quiet song in the kitchen, and an evening that did not need hurrying.

Marlowe and Tate slow dancing in a warm farmhouse kitchen while supper finishes.

The pasta was nearly ready, but the kitchen had already done the important work. Steam gathered on the window and the table waited with two plates, a loaf, and the bowl of tomatoes that had been ripening on the counter.

We took the minute while the water kept moving. One hand stayed near the stove, the other found its place, and the whole room felt less like a checklist than a place to be together.

When supper finally came to the table, it was simple and hot and exactly enough. The recipes nearby are for evenings like this: useful, unfussy, and ready when the conversation has run long.
