Chicago becomes legible from the river. The setbacks, bridges, old masonry, and glass towers stop competing for attention and begin to read as one long argument about what a city can build beside working water.

A food and architecture tour can carry a full day if the route has a point of view. We would rather hear why a dish belongs to its neighborhood and why a building changed the street than rush through a greatest-hits list with no time to ask a second question.
