Savannah rewards an early start, before the day gathers heat and the paths around Forsyth Park become a procession. Begin beneath the live oaks while the fountain is still catching low light, then turn north without treating the walk as a race to the river.

The squares are the real structure of the morning. Let one lead to the next, pausing where a bench, iron gate, or pocket of shade changes the scale of the street; the pleasure is less in completing the grid than in noticing how each small green room interrupts the city.

By late morning, choose one guide who can connect architecture to the people who built, preserved, and contested the district. A trolley covers distance when the weather is heavy, while a private walk leaves more room for questions and for the stories that do not fit neatly on a plaque.

Lunch should be the day's anchor rather than a hurried stop between reservations. Look for a table that makes room for coastal ingredients and regional technique, order enough to share, and leave the next hour unscheduled so the meal can set the pace for the afternoon.

Move toward River Street only after the light begins to soften. The descent changes the city's texture from shaded squares to stone, warehouses, water, and working traffic; a riverboat or a slow walk along the edge gives the port context that the bluff hides.

Keep the evening simple. Watch the river change color, climb back toward the quieter streets before dinner, and resist adding one more timed stop. Savannah is most memorable when there is enough margin to hear the city between the planned parts.
